Burglary rises ‘not inevitable’, says the home secretary

Despite past increases in burglary during times of hardship, the home sceretary has stated burglary is not inevitably going to rise this time.

Daniel Sandford - BBC home affairs correspondent - has stated that over the last 30 years, burglary appeared to have risen in times of economic hardship, like in the mid-80’s and early 90’s. Research has shown that toward the end of 2008 burglary began to sharply rise for the first time since 2000.

Oxford Estate getting long Overdue CCTV Systems

Two trouble spots on an estate in Oxford will be protected by CCTV systems after the scheme was backed by local business owners.

The area of shops has long had trouble with shop lifting, drug dealing and fighting. After years of attempting to persuade the council to put CCTV cameras in the area, they have finally agreed to go ahead due to the heavy amount of backing by the areas shop owners.

70% of Murders Solved by CCTV

Scotland Yard’s head of homicide recently stated in a survey that CCTV evidence has become as important as DNA and fingerprinting.

The first survey of its kind attempts to determine the importance of CCTV in todays crime investigations.

It was revealed that almost every single murder case uses CCTV footage as some type of evidence. In 90 murder cases over a one year period, 86 cases used CCTV camera footage. Of these 86 cases, 65 of the evidence were of the murder itself or the events leading up to and after it.

Listening CCTV Trial Conclusion

A recent trial of microphones attached to CCTV cameras for the purpose of recording audio along with images has ended in the borough of Westminster.

The introduction of the microphones was met with objection from privacy campaigners and the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).
