It has been claimed that IP CCTV cameras can be utilised alongside existing CCTV cameras systems to gain the benefits of new CCTV equipment technologies, all without greatly increasing expenditure.

The new IP-based CCTV video surveillance equipment can be integrated using a one-channel video encoder.

This new solution presents a cost-effective solution to gaining the benefits of IP network video without having to replace existing analogue CCTV systems.

The CCTV industry has recently seen a major trend in adopting the IP CCTV technology. However, many installations have been integrated into existing systems until the older technology CCTV systems become obselete, saving both time in stallation and overall costs for updating of the CCTV systems.

The equipment shown above is for illustration purposes, the same principles will apply to your system.

Decide on camera locations ? bear in mind the field of view required, also try to avoid (if you can) pointing the CCTV cameras at direct sources of light (bright doorways, windows, lighting, etc.) as this may affect the image quality. Conversely, you should ensure there is sufficient lighting available.

Run, for each camera location, one of the pre-terminated cables supplied, between the camera location and the location of the control equipment (DVR). Ensure the male power plug is at the camera side and the power socket is at the control equipment side. Connect each camera?s ?video out? socket to a ?video input? socket on the DVR via the BLACK BNC (push & twist) lead on the cable supplied (at each end).

Connect each CCTV camera’s power input to the 4 way lead on the 12V power supply via the same cable as above.

Connect the monitor to the DVR using the BNC-BNC/Scart lead supplied, when using a TFT monitor please refer to manufacturers connection instructions.

Connect the DVR’s power supply to the DC19V input on the DVR, once this is done you can connect the DVR, monitor & camera power supply to the mains.

Continue to program the DVR as per the instruction manual. PLEASE NOTE (the manual may ask you to install the hard drive, this has already been done for you and is ready to go).

WARNING: Ensure you DO NOT use the 19V power supply for the recorder to power the cameras, this may cause damage to the cameras (existing customers can call us on 0845 450 2519 if unsure).

Despite past increases in burglary during times of hardship, the home sceretary has stated burglary is not inevitably going to rise this time.

Daniel Sandford - BBC home affairs correspondent - has stated that over the last 30 years, burglary appeared to have risen in times of economic hardship, like in the mid-80’s and early 90’s. Research has shown that toward the end of 2008 burglary began to sharply rise for the first time since 2000.

The home secretary, Mrs Smith, made the comments at a burglary summit for police, insurance firms, DIY stores, charities and the CCTV industry which also conincided with the start of a crime prevention campaign for England and Wales.

Ms Smith told BBC Breakfast she wanted to “get on the front foot” adding: “I think it’s important that we act before there’s a problem.

“I want to make sure that we’re providing people with the best possible advice to protect their homes, that we’re bringing together the partners that can help to keep burglary down.”

The summit aims to work out ways of reducing crime during this difficult period and looks to help people on low incomes to improve their home security. One approach has already been launched; a website offering a short test to determine how well a persons home is protected.

A series of simple questions are asked, such as: “do you lock the doors when leaving the house” and “is your house monitored by CCTV cameras”. The result of the test then determines how protected a home is and offers advice on how security can be improved.

Vienna Zoo are to begin conducting breaking research using the latest technology IP CCTV cameras. An animal behaviour research programme is shortly to begin, that watches the lifestyle of panda’s, penguins and rhinos 24/7.

The 15 fixed and PTZ cameras can be controlled by staff, students and scientists to watch the enclosures either live or recorded. The zoo have stated they are very pleased with the technology and the licensing - that allows them to install the operating software on upto 10 computers on the network is great for allowing access to students and public as well as for the reseachers.

The zoo also requested audio coverage during the design of the CCTV system and 8 of the enclosures were given high quality microphones.

The IP CCTV technology is a great way of broadcasting high quality surveillance footage without causing a heavy amount of bandwidth usage on the network. Storage is also of a high efficiently, allowing fro a great deal of CCTV footage to be stored on the zoo’s 1TB storage facility.

The operating software is set to record at a very low frame rate when there is no motion detected, which reduces the amount of storage required during moments of inactivity.
