Two trouble spots on an estate in Oxford will be protected by CCTV systems after the scheme was backed by local business owners.
The area of shops has long had trouble with shop lifting, drug dealing and fighting. After years of attempting to persuade the council to put CCTV cameras in the area, they have finally agreed to go ahead due to the heavy amount of backing by the areas shop owners.
The area will be equipped with two hi-tech 360 degree, revolving cameras, costing ?20,000 to be installed and linked to a business CCTV system.
Business owners stated that the area has need CCTV cameras for a long time and in the past many have been asked if they have CCTV footage by the police, whom have been unable to proceed with investigations due to a lack of evidence. The Independent Working Class Association councillor said: ?It?s to stop intimidation. It?s prevention rather than cure.?
