Biometric security uses a biological characteristic to identify an individual. This is a very new technology that is improving all the time and is now successful enough to be used as evidence in court.
CCTV footage can be analysed to determine the characteristics of a person, such as how they walk. This can then be compared with different footage of that person and their characteristic patterns can be matched.
This is especially useful when somebody has committed a criminal act but the footage was not clear enough to see their face.
Technology like this was recently used in court to compare footage of criminal activity. As the criminal walked into the court, his movement was recorded by another CCTV camera and his walking style was deemed to be the same as that as the suspected man in the first footage.
In the future, this technology will be processed by computer. Should a computer be given footage of a criminal’s activity, it can then search a live stream for the variables supplied and notify CCTV operaters when the criminal is spotted.
