President Nicolas Sarkozy has promised to emulate the CCTV technology numbers used by London in an attempt to track criminals and terrorists.
The Paris metro and rail networks already run 9500 CCTV devices but the police only have 300 of these at their disposal. A new scheme will see 1200 new CCTV cameras installed, mostly in high risk areas.
Currently, London has more than 10 times the amount of CCTV cameras than France and the new scheme will far from match that amount but the president stated he is very impressed with the efficiency of the British Police, which in part is due to the excellent surveillance network.
